We won't kid you, Hang Gliding is an equipment intensive sport. We work hard to keep our gear clean, new, and safe so you will have access to the best equipment to learning with. We know that using the proper equipment is a critical part of keeping safe, and getting you rated as quickly as possible.
We use Falcon Gliders for tandem flights and instruction. We have several different gliders for different pilot weights. There are several different components to getting you airborne, below is list of some of that gear:
Gliders
This important piece of gear comes in many different shapes and sizes and prices. Innovations in material technology have been exploited by the Hang Gliding industry to make modern gliders lighter, stronger, and faster. Gliders are measured in several different ways, the most common being the number of square feet of surface area. Another important factor is performance and corresponding aerodynamic shape. Performance is difficult to define, but if you read an issue of USHPA's Magazine you can get a good idea of what's out there.
Harness
A harness hangs from the glider. Harnesses are responsible for the "hang" in hang gliding. The most widely used harness type is the pod-harness. This cocoon like shell helps to improve your aerodynamic profile as well as store a parachute for emergency purposes
Beginners can expect to use a harness that is less bulky than the pod-harness; allowing for easy access to your feet for landing and taking off.
Helmet
One of the most important parts of flying is safety. Some people use bicycle helmets while others use more aerodynamic helmets specially designed for hang gliding.
Important Gadgets
Variometers are instruments that are able to tell you if you are ascending or descending. Variometers use highly sensitive pressure detection instrumentation to determining altitude increases and decreases through slight variations in atmospheric pressure. These instruments are so accurate that you can raise them an inch or two and they will beep. In addition to detecting your altitude the trend has been to combine Variometers with GPS, and flight computers. The sky is the limit when it comes to combining computers with flying.
Our Bodies
One of the most important parts of a Hang Glider rig is the pilot. You must be mildly physically fit in order to command a glider. Being of healthy mental state is important too, but we won't delve into that.
